3DS liability shift
Liability shift means that the 3DS validator - usually the cardholder's issuing institution - takes the liability in case of a chargeback upon themselves.
How this works
The following is a use case of 3DS liability shift:
A customer requests to make a purchase through a merchant's website. The customer completes the 3DS process. The 3DS validator assesses the 3DS completion requests, assessing how risky the purchase is, and sends back a "validated" or "failed" response. If the 3DS provider validates the transaction, then in case of a future chargeback on that transaction - the 3DS validator will assume the financial burden of the transaction.
In cases of chargebacks on 3DS-validated transactions, contact your acquiring institution to enact the liability shift.
